Acupuncture for Pain Relief: What the Research Says

Acupuncture has been practiced for over 2,500 years — but in recent decades, it's gained serious attention from Western medicine. Major health organizations including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) now recognize acupuncture as an effective treatment for a range of conditions.

At Locus Health Centre, our registered acupuncturists and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners combine ancient wisdom with modern clinical knowledge to help patients find relief from pain and improve their overall wellbeing.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, acupuncture works by stimulating specific points along energy pathways (meridians) in the body to restore balance and promote healing.

From a Western biomedical perspective, research shows that acupuncture:

  • Stimulates the release of endorphins and other natural pain-relieving chemicals
  • Modulates the nervous system's pain signaling pathways
  • Reduces inflammation by influencing immune responses
  • Improves local blood flow to injured or painful areas
  • Activates the body's natural healing mechanisms

Both frameworks point to the same outcome: real, measurable relief.

What Conditions Does Acupuncture Treat?

Acupuncture is most well-known for pain management, but its applications are broad:

Pain Conditions

  • Chronic low back pain
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Osteoarthritis (especially knee pain)
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Sciatica and nerve pain
  • Sports injuries and tendinopathies

Other Conditions

  • Stress, anxiety, and insomnia
  • Digestive issues (IBS, nausea)
  • Menstrual irregularities and fertility support
  • Allergies and sinus congestion
  • Post-surgical recovery
  • Motor vehicle accident (MVA) injuries

What Does the Research Say?

A landmark 2012 meta-analysis published in the Archives of Internal Medicine — analyzing data from nearly 18,000 patients — found that acupuncture was significantly more effective than both sham acupuncture and no treatment for chronic pain conditions including back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, and osteoarthritis.

More recent research continues to support acupuncture's effectiveness, particularly for:

  • Chronic low back pain: Recommended by multiple clinical guidelines as a first-line treatment
  • Headaches and migraines: Shown to reduce frequency and severity
  • Knee osteoarthritis: Demonstrated improvements in pain and function
  • Chemotherapy-induced nausea: Widely used in oncology settings

What to Expect at Your First Acupuncture Appointment

Your first visit begins with a comprehensive intake. Your practitioner will ask about your main concerns, medical history, sleep, digestion, stress levels, and other factors that influence your health from a TCM perspective.

The treatment itself involves the gentle insertion of very fine, sterile needles at specific acupuncture points. Most patients feel minimal discomfort — often just a brief sensation of pressure or warmth. Many people find the experience deeply relaxing and even fall asleep during treatment.

Sessions typically last 45–60 minutes. Needles are retained for 20–30 minutes while you rest.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Acute conditions often respond quickly — sometimes within 3–5 sessions. Chronic conditions that have been present for months or years typically require more treatments to achieve lasting results. Your practitioner will discuss a realistic treatment plan at your first visit.

Is Acupuncture Covered by Insurance?

Many extended health benefit plans in BC include acupuncture coverage. At Locus Health Centre, we offer direct billing to most major insurers. ICBC also covers acupuncture for motor vehicle accident injuries.
